![]() ![]() As I said, it's remarkable that Night Shift isn't recognized as a formidable comedy of the 1980's. His meaningless existence finally has something to live for when he falls for Shelley Long's Belinda, which is a very sweet love story at the heart of a laugh-out-loud comedy. When down-on-his-luck financial planner Chuck Lumley (Henry Winkler), fast-talking loser with a million get-rich-quick schemes Bill Blazejowski (Michael. I always like films that have shy characters evolve into take-charge leaders, which is exactly what happens with Winkler's character Chuck Lumley. His performance as Billy Blazejowski steals the film and shows why Keaton was later chosen to play Beetlejuice. Besides, how can any film go wrong when you've got Keaton in a comedic role. Even early on in his career, it was clear that Ron Howard was going to be great at taking a bizarre, outlandish story and making a decent film out of it. Morgue by day, brothel by night? This film should've gone down as one of the most ludicrous attempts at comedy ever made, but it didn't. The entire premise never should have worked. Of course, what sells the film is the chemistry between Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton, who totally have an 80's Odd Couple kind of relationship. I'm stunned that this film doesn't have more of a following, as it still holds up and is full of memorable moments (and a brief appearance from a young Kevin Costner as an extra). The problem isn't so much the fact that the duo is running a whore house from the morgue, but more so Chuck's growing affection for Belinda and the complicated nature of being in love with a hooker.Night Shift is a surprisingly funny gem that came out of the early 80's and is most likely responsible for jumpstarting the careers of both Ron Howard and Michael Keaton. When Belinda's (Long) pimp dies, Bill talks Chuck into assuming his role, and he convinces Chuck to put his business skills to work by running a brothel out of the morgue. To makes things work, wacky Bill Blazejowski (Keaton) is hired to work with Chuck, and that is when things get interesting. Henry took on that kind of role and Michael Keaton came in with this flamboyant, flashy character who has to take the stage from time to time and dominate. In reality, the position is a demotion of sorts, as the morgue's manager frees up the day shift to hire family. Anxious to help a friendly prostitute named. Everything is fine with his quiet life, until he is promoted to night manager a position he doesn't want. Chuck Lumley is a soft-spoken man who has the terrible job of being a morgue attendant during the night shift. In this movie, Chuck Lumley (Winkler), former Wall Street Broker, burns out in the rat race and becomes the night attendant at the local morgue. The movie received mostly positive reviews from critics, with praise being given to both Winkler and Keaton for their character portrayals. ![]() The movie had a large cast, including Henry Winkler as Chuck Lumley, Michael Keaton as Bill Blazejowski, Shelley Long as Belinda Keaton, and even young cameos by Kevin Costner and Shannen Doherty. Night Shift (1982) was one of Ron Howard's first movies as director. "Ever since two enterprising young men turned the city morgue into a swinging business, people have been dying to get in". ![]()
